Under the westernmost crags of the Taurus mountains, which thrust out on each side of the lake like welcoming arms, lies the lakeside town of Köyceğiz. A southerly facing pretty town with a broad esplanade it is fringed by forests of alder, willow and pine and is joined to the Mediterranean by a river from the bottom end of the lake. The population of the town is relatively small, with a charming and unspoilt feel and a rich historical heritage.

öyceğiz is a 45 minutes drive from Dalaman airport but a world away from the hustle and bustle of modern life. There are many waterside cafes and restaurants which provide the perfect spot to relax and watch town life stroll past. The small marina is a marvellous sight, especially in the evening when the fishing boats float like pods upon the lake, suspended in space and time. During the day boat trips leave from the same spot and in the evening moonlight champagne cruises venture out onto the smooth surfaced lake.

The ambience is relaxed and unspoilt without a hint of mass market tourism. Köyceğiz has always catered for the independent visitor and its services are designed with a view to quality not quantity. The streets behind the esplanade are cool and narrow with small shops offering all manner of produce. Monday is market day and the town fills with an array of stalls selling everything from clothing, fruit and veg, jewellery and household wares. This is a local farmer’s market with much bartering and buying to be done. People (Turkish and holiday makers) from all over the area step off the Dolmus (local transport) to enjoy the throng.

Just out of town there is a world of white feathery reed heads swaying softly in the breeze and fantastic views out to the mountains. İt is possible to trek for miles in the cleanest of mountain air along forest paths and past terraces of olive trees. On the opposite shore of the lake are the famous thermal baths of Sultaniye. This beautiful classically built complex of enclosed sulphur baths is open all year round and frequented by both tourists and those seriously interested in the health giving properties of the water.

Located only 1 hour from the popular and cosmopolitan resort of Marmaris and 20 minutes from the beautiful village of Dalyan, Koycegiz is the perfect place to escape to when you need a location which provides both entertainment and relaxation as well as the beautiful weather and scenery that Turkey is famous for.
